Antenatal Classes

“I came along to the class with an open mind, thinking maybe I’ll learn something. What I found instead is that today’s class has been invaluable.”—Father to be

Classes take place on Saturdays in High Barnet.
Upcoming classes will be held on:

11th February 2012
10th March 2012
14th April 2012
19th May 2012

Our one-day antenatal classes are designed for couples (the mother-to-be plus her partner, friend or family member). They are best suited to women in the last three months of pregnancy. Small class size (5 couples or less) guarantees more time and attention for each couple.

The aim of the class is to prepare you for birth and early parenthood in as smooth and stress-free a way as possible. A variety of learning materials are used, including pictures, games, videos and birth stories. Classes cover:

  • What to expect in the last few weeks of pregnancy
  • Preparing for birth – choosing place of birth and carers
  • Stages of labour and what happens in each one
  • Practical tips for coping with labour and birth
  • The different types of birth
  • What to expect in the first days and weeks after the birth
  • Options for feeding your baby
  • Caring for your newborn

Classes are run by Melissa Coyne, RM. Working as both an independent and an NHS midwife, Melissa has supported hundreds of families through births at home, in birth centres and in most of the London and south Herts hospitals. She has a wide-ranging perspective on the various NHS and private maternity choices available.
